Sure-Spot Phosgene Dosimeter Badges

Sure-Spot Phosgene Dosimeter Badge

The Scott Instruments Dosimeter Badges operates by direct diffusion exposure - no pump or active elements are needed. Badges are lightweight, direct-reading monitors designed to be worn by individuals who are potentially at risk from acutely toxic gases in their working environments. They indicate the presence of these gases by means of a highly specific chemical color reaction in which the amount of color produced is directly proportional to the concentration of gas and the time of exposure.

Badge programs typically require a minimum of administrative and maintenance effort. Badges are individually sealed, numbered and dated and can be easily distributed from convenient locations around the facility. A new badge is issued to each employee at the beginning of each shift and simply disposed of if not stain develops. Each badge serves to record an individuals daily exposure. This contributes to a comprehensive worker history.

The Sure-Spot Phosgene Dosimeter Badges are available in 2 versions.

The 3-day badge simply provides a control window which is peeled off when beginning the detection period. The 6 day phosgene badge offers added benefits not engineered into the three day model. The use of a filter barrier over the control window and extends the detection range to 300 ppm-mm and protects against hydrogen chloride (a common by-product present in or around phosgene releases). In addition the filter barrier blocks UV light to prevent unwanted discoloration of the stain.

Phosgene "A" Chemistry versus "B" Chemistry

Sure Spot detectors can use two different colorimetric chemistries to detect Phosgene. Papertape badges treated with the Type "A" chemistry reacts to both phosgene and to the presence of chloroformates (a family of common by-products related to phosgene chemistry). This is typically the preferred method for phosgene detection and in the case of dosimeter badges, requires the use of a separate color wheel to estimate dose. Papertape treated with the Type "B" chemistry does not react to the presence of chloroformates.

Each badge uses two separate windows. In the 3-day badges, the first of these is the INDICTOR WINDOW. It provides immediate color indication to the wearer when phosgene is present. The second window, the CONTROL WINDOW, is covered by a removable filter-barrier. This extends the range to 300 ppm-mm and protects against acid gases, sun bleaching, etc. This window is used for accurate dose measurement after peeling off the filter.
